Home Moose in New York

Information on moose status and management in New York state is available here.

In response to a question from a Mooseworld user about moose-car accidents in Region 6 (Jefferson, St. Lawrence, Lewis, Oneida and Herkimer counties) of New York and the possibility of moose taking hold in New York, we received the following reply from a conservation officer in the state:

"There certainly are moose in Region 6 but we do not know a great deal about them. We have a number of sightings of bulls each fall in the dairy regions of Lewis County but the disappear during other times of the year. Two recently collared bulls from Lewis County summered in the region from Honondaga Lake to Raquette Lake.

We certainly have animals full time around the Adirondack League Club and points directly to the east. We also get reports each fall throughout much of St. Lawrence county although we seldom get reports other times of the year.

The only collared cow we have in the area just makes it into the Honondaga Lake region of Herkimer County. Another collared cow recently spent much of a summer walking through St. Lawrence county, wintered on the St. Lawrence River, and was last reported east of Algonquin Provincial Park.

Our statewide population appears to be increasing, although more so in the eastern counties of northern New York State where it is closer to the source of animals in New England."  MW
