On Monday the 14th of July, 2008, my partner and I were hiking down an abandoned railroad grade in Minnesota's Great Northwoods. We stepped off the railroad grade briefly to examine the year's blueberry shrubs on a small hill. When we stepped back down onto the grade, we spotted a beautiful dark brown moose walking down the grade ahead of us, about 40 yards away. We could see the whitish hair near the rear and the white on the lower legs. My partner noticed the moose was growing antlers! We walked quietly behind the moose for a minute, after which the moose moose gently turned off the grade, through a swamp and into the forest beyond. It was a short but sweet sighting. Shawn.
"Ludlow, Massachusetts: On the morning of June 11, 2008 as I got ready for work I passed my bay window in my kitchen and there was an extremely large male moose looking at me though the window. My dog happened to be following me around as usual and saw him immediately (he was tough to miss). The mooose then half-heartedly trotted away into my backyard and back into the woods as my rough and tough dog barked. I don't think he was impressed; however, it was very exciting for me considering it was my first face-to-face encounter. If only I had him around a moment longer I would have gotten a snap shot. Greatfull for the once in a life time sighting! Jamie Lee.
Mooseworld: In our experience, a lot of the bravado of man and dog seems to disappear when there is no window in between.
"I was running on a bike path listening to music [July 2008] when I left the path I saw a woman pointing behind me and screaming, so I turned off my music and she was saying 'A baby moose, a baby moose!' I turned around just in time to see the moose running away from us back onto the trail. She said that it was actually running with me for a moment, along side me. I had my music on so I didn't sense the moose there. I continued to watch after the moose who disappeared for a moment then returned to the bike path alongside some railroad tracks. Awesome spiritual experience. The man with her said that he had been living in New Hampshire for 30 years and had never seen a baby moose. I had just moved here three days before. Leah."

"Here's a neat moose story I thought you might enjoy. Happened a few years ago.
I'm a Colorado kid, through and through, and while I have seen moose several times (and know where to look for them), many Coloradans have not. Anyway, we took some good friends of ours camping in the Cameron Pass area (Colorado), and I really wanted them to see a moose, which they never had. Well, wouldn't you know it, on this occasion my trusty moose spot came up empty, so my friends still hadn't seen a moose. Then, to make matters worse, I got up very early before everyone else the next morning and went for a drive alone—and I see two of them. Returning to our campsite for breakfast (Tunnel Campground), I was feeling kind of bummed that it looked like it just wasn't going to happen for our friends after all. Oh well . . .
Then, as we were all eating breakfast, there was a sudden commotion from the campers just across the loop from us. As I glanced up, the guy was motioning excitedly for us to look where he was pointing, which of course we all did. Immediately our wide eyes beheld the approach of a majestic bull moose—strolling through the campground like he owned the place! This big boy walked right in between our campsite and the one "nextdoor." My son was holding back our border collie (hugging him bodily, not by a leash), who wanted to "go!" It might've been my imagination, but it seemed like when the moose spotted our dog, it may have picked up its pace a little.
The greatest thing was how awestruck our friends were. They still tell the story to friends. I was so happy for them, as my disappointment was turned to delight! My wife and three children loved the experience too. Thank you, Lord!
One last thing: I was impressed at how quickly such a huge beast could "disappear" after the incident. He headed for the willows, which closed like a door behind him, and within a few short seconds you would never have even known he had passed that way! I love the wonders of nature. Jonathan."
Mooseworld: This reminds of of our own close encounter with bull moose (see Owners' Page), and how silent they were.
"My wife and I have recently traveled to Fairbanks, Alaska. We had stayed at a hotel near the entrance of Denali National Park. I was expecting to see plenty of moose around this area, where we celebrated our Fourth Year Anniversary on May 21 [2008]. We spotted an albino cow moose with the pink eyes clearly visible on film right on May 21. I wish I would've had a snapshot camera at that moment! We have this unusual cow on film with my video camera. I was like "WOW" where I didn't believe it was albino at first, since my wife was filming the bedded down cow among some tall brush. I got to see the film afterwords, and I was convinced it was! We have showed the film to Park Rangers of Denali, and they too could not believe it. We enjoyed seeing so many other moose as well on our trip. I have made my wife an instant moose lover just like myself being the moose is my very favorite animal. We both had so much fun seeing them every day it was heaven! We will visit Alaska hopefully shortly again, and we are looking forward to it. Thank you for a wonderfull Web site. We enjoy it all the time. Dan and Deb.
Mooseworld: Naturally we think a perfect anniversary would be in a place with lots of moose.
"We had it in our minds to find and view a moose along the infamous Highway 60 (the parameter of Algonquin Park, by Huntsville, Ontario, Canada). Last year on vacation in the area we drove, we hiked and all to no avail in finding or viewing our big funny-looking friend. We did however learn some tricks of the trade from the learned locals. This year it took two long, long trips at the end of May (with the salt melted from the snow on the side of the roads in the ditches) and at dusk (about 8/9pm) to finally see some moose!
I was so so excited when I caught glimpse of our first moose I took my video camera and ran out of the car with my son. I actually started running towards the moose when my husband reminded me to not run in the bush. There are other creatures in the area of course and I was not prepared at all!
Further down the road there was a male bull wandering in the street that subsequently ran into the bush. We pulled on the side of the road again and saw two young male bulls eating vegetation in the water puddles at the ditch. On our way home we saw one more moose in the thick of the woods at the side of Highway 60. We felt it was worth it! Rachael."
"The moose was very cool. He was big. He was good. [One] was running on the road. I wasn't scared." Joel, age 6, safely in the van."

"I was riding home with coworkers from our job on Vassar Ave. in Poughkeepsie, New York and we were again mis-directed by our rental car agency-provided GPS. This was around dusk about a week and a half ago (it's Memorial Day weekend now), and I saw a moose standing by a pond on somebody's land! I know this is a bit south for moose, but read that they exist in northern NY and their numbers have been growing. I'm from Kwntucky, where obviously we don't have them (yet), so this was quite a fascinating experience! I am guessing that it was a younger male, probably pushed out of its origin by larger ones. It wasn't HUGE compared to the horses I'm used to, and its rack wasn't massive. I'm completely obsessed with the moose now... Elaine."

"We just moved from Texas to Milo, Maine last September. We hadn't seen any moose and we were beginning to think they were simply a myth the locals told to tourists to get them to come back. Then this past weekend (May 2-4, 2008) my parents were visiting and we took them for a ride from Milo up to Lincoln [Maine] and right there on the side of the rode was a moose just watching us. Two nights later, my husband was in our front yard and came yelling in the front door 'There's a moose out here. I'm not kidding.' We didn't see it, but the next morning we found its trail going right through our yard. It was so close to our bedroom window it could have peeked right in! Looking forward to our next encounter, from afar, of course. Katherine."
Mooseworld: We would trade a moose sighting for an armadillo sighting any day.
"We just spent the week up in Bethel, Maine (during the kid's April vacation) and I told my two boys that moose are everywhere up here in Maine. Of course they didn't believe me. So I told them about my five day backpacking trip up to Mt. Katahdin where after I just arrived in the parking lot to go home (having not seen a moose of course). My friend was a bit behind me, so I went back in about 50 feet on the trail and bam, there is a moose!
Anyway, we were close to Grafton Notch park, so I decided to head up there around dusk. As soon as we arrived in the park, we immediately saw a huge bull. He walked into the woods. We then drove about 20 mph throughout the entire park and didn't see another one. I kept on driving beyond the park and it was like a zombie movie! They were everywhere just walking around. We had this one young male, right in front of our car. He would move a bit, we would move a bit... this carried on for about 10 minutes. Then four more were drinking on the right side. It was a total jackpot after the park (heading toward New Hampshire). If you want to see moose, head up to the park around dusk and drive slowly and you are almost guaranteed to see a lot of them. Jason.
Mooseworld: Now the boys will have stories to tell about moose.
"March 25th 2008, 7pm cmt, Glenburn North Dakota,4 Miles North of Minot AFB. Coming home from Minot headed west to our house, my husband, son and I saw a cow with her baby in the tree rows just east of our home. Friends had told us about seeing moose in towns north us of but we were very suprised to see them that close to our home. It will be interesting to see how close she stays. Holly."
Mooseworld: Thanks for the report from North Dakota.
